A Brief History of Nusa Penida Island Indonesia

blog-images

Nusa Penida history dates back to 914 AD, mentioned in the Belanjong Pillar inscriptions about King Sri Kesari Warmadewa's military expedition. Despite resisting multiple attacks, the Gelgel dynasty conquered the island in the late 17th century, killing its last king, Dalem Bungkut.

The island then became part of the Klungkung kingdom and remained so even after Dutch colonization in 1908. Interestingly, the Dutch called it "Bandit Island" in 1900 because Klungkung used it as an exile destination for criminals and political prisoners. The name "Nusa Penida" means "island of priests" in Balinese, reflecting its deep connection to Hinduism.
